Biographical Timeline

1970s–1980s
Early Life & Basketball Beginnings
Sonia Chase was born on March 9, 1976, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Theodore R. Chase, Jr. and Shirley Chase. At just five years old, her father introduced her to the game of basketball, planting the seeds of a lifelong passion. By age six, Sonia was already playing competitively against boys in the Woodmoor Elementary School After-School Program. The following year, she joined the all-boys Woodmoor Recreation League, where she held her own and gained a reputation as a fearless and skilled competitor. At age eight, she expanded her playing experience by joining the Liberty Road Girls Basketball Program at Campfield Recreation Center. From ages 8 to 17, she won numerous team championships and individual honors, including Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards in Baltimore's premier youth leagues such as the Baltimore Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL) and Project Survival.

1987–1994
Academic Excellence & National Recognition
Sonia's talents on the court and in the classroom earned her a grant scholarship to attend McDonogh School, a prestigious college preparatory school in Owings Mills, Maryland, where she studied from seventh through twelfth grade. During her time at McDonogh, Sonia distinguished herself as a standout student-athlete. In seventh grade, she received her first college basketball recruiting letter from Brown University—followed by interest from Yale, Dartmouth, and eventually every Ivy League school. From 1990 to 1994, Sonia earned multiple honors including MVP, Coaches Award, Prep Player of the Week, Ms. Basketball, and the distinguished Rollins-Luetkemeyer Scholar award. By the time she was a junior, she had received recruiting letters from nearly every major university in the United States. In 1992, she verbally committed to the University of Maryland, College Park, and signed her official letter of intent before her senior year—solidifying her path to NCAA Division I athletics.

1994–1998
Collegiate Athletic Career
At the University of Maryland, College Park, Sonia made an immediate impact on the women’s basketball program.
